Environs The natural terrace of the Alpinia Botanical Gardens [10 minutes by car from Stresa] is wonderful. On an area of about ten hectares there are the wonderful and luxuriant gardens of Villa Taranto [in Pallanza, about 15 minutes by car from Stresa] which houses collections of very rare plants imported from all over the world, unique in Europe. The Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso is located in the municipality of Leggiuno. Considered the most important castle in the Verbano area The castle of Angera stands on a hill above the small town of Angera. The island of Orta San Giulio rises about 400 m from the shore. The Mottarone is the ideal mountain for hikers, thanks to a series of fascinating trails with various levels of difficulty, where you can practise all kinds of activities in both summer and winter. The Mottarone Adventure Park is equipped with lianas, zip lines, bridges, barrels, nets and Tarzan jump: the perfect fun to spend an exciting day with family and friends in the midst of nature, in total safety. To enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views on two wheels, you can rent mountain bikes. The park is located on top of Mount Mottarone, with a breathtaking view of the Alps and the lakes in the area. The Colossus of San Carlo Borromeo is a statue over 30 meters high located in Arona, built between 1624 and 1698. Alpinia Botanical Gardens
It extends for 40 thousand square meters and offers a breath-taking panoramic view of the lake and the Alps. More than a thousand different species of plants and flowers from the surrounding alpine and sub-alpine areas.
Villa Taranto
Since 1952 the gardens have been open to the public and visited not only by nature lovers but above all by study groups and botanical experts due to the complexity and peculiarity of the selection.
The Villa, now used as a representative office for the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, is closed to the public.
Santa Caterina del Sasso
Perched on the sheer rock in one of the deepest points of Verbano, the Hermitage is a monastic complex dating back to the thirteenth century.
Angera’s Castle
Built in medieval times, the castle still maintains the architectural aspect of the 13th-14th century when it had exclusively defensive functions.
Visit also the room called “della Giustizia” in whose large rooms there is an important cycle of frescoes on the signs of the zodiac.
In the period from March to October inside the fortress you can also visit the Doll Museum and the Archaeological Museum which collects artifacts dating from the Mesolithic to the Roman era found in the Angera area.
Orta San Giulio
Much of the surface is occupied by the Seminary building, built starting from 1844 on what remained of the ancient castle tower.
A visit to the Basilica of San Giulio is a must.
Mottarone
Along the many trails indicated you can practise Nordic walking or classic walks.
The fittest cyclists can emulate the endeavours of the riders in the Giro d’Italia. Or else test themselves in the dedicated climbing area, with rock climbing walls for beginners and experienced climbers.
The area includes five lifts for a total of 17 alpine ski slopes, snowboards, 1 ski school field and a bob track.
Mottarone Adventure Park
Inaugurated in 2019 with the aim of showcasing the wooded area, the Mottarone Adventure Park is the place where the
adventure combines with the desire to escape from everyday from the age of three. Lianas, zip lines, bridges, barrels, nets and tarzan jump: 3.000 mq of fun ideal to spend an exciting day in nature with family and friends, in total safety thanks to the continuous lifeline system.
Alpyland
This attraction consists of a bobsled ride on rail starting from the top of the mountain and arriving at the cable car station.
The attraction is open all year round.
